A picture that symbolizes me!

This is a picture of my favorite food! Sushi!
I chose this picture to represent me, as I enjoy eating it
I also love how this sort of food is highly nutritious
Sushi for me, is a way to socialize with my friends
All my friends love sushi too and when we go to malls,
we ALWAYS go to eat sushi.
While we eat sushi, we talk about alot of things,
and some of my funnest incidents with my friends happened while eating sushi
To me, sushi is more than just a food and thats why i chose it to represent me!

How drugs affect the brain, How mushrooms affect the brain

http://www.loni.ucla.edu/~thompson/MEDIA/METH/0720-sci-METH-ch.jpg

El informacion on how drugs work

Your brain controls all of your perceptions -the way you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. How does your brain communicate with the rest of your body? Chemical messengers transmit information from nerve cell to nerve cell in the body and the brain. Messages are constantly being sent back and forth with amazing speed.
Your nerve cells are called neurons, and their chemical messengers are called neurotransmitters. When neurotransmitters attach to special places on nerve cells (called receptors), they cause changes in the nerve cells.
This communication system can be disrupted by chemicals like hallucinogens, and the results are changes in the way you sense the world around you.

Los efectos de los psilocybin mushrooms

Psilocin, the active metabolite of psilocybin, acts by interaction with neurotransmitter receptors on nerve cells in the brain where it mimicks the action of serotonin (5-HT). Specifically, psilocin is a post-synaptic 5-HT2A receptor agonist. This is the same mechanism of action as for the other hallucinogens like LSD, mescaline, or 2C-B. LSD and psilocybin show cross-tolerance after taking one of these substances, the brain quickly develops a tolerance to it, and taking another dose of either soon afterward will require more than usual to achieve the desired effects.

The reason people abuse drogas (drugs)

Jefe,
I'm hiding in the forest in Kuwait. My target is the secret psilocybin mushroom dealer that was last seen in Kuwait. To my current knowledge, our target's name is Rodrigo Diez he's been a drug addict since 3rd grade and influences everyone around him to start drugs. Please prevent any other agents from chasing Rodrigo as it may result in shroom addicted agents. This is a job that can only be done by me, Dora.

I've captured some workers of Rodrigo and when Diego interrogated them about their motivation of drug abuse, they reported as the following

  • To avoid feeling bored, some people think that drug taking is daring and exciting.

  • Peer pressure, to join in with others.

  • As an escape from problems at home and school, or as an escape from outside pressures.

  • To relax and ‘feel good’, returning to drugs for the 'high feeling'.

  • Ease of access to drugs.

  • Some medications, such as sleeping pills and painkillers, are physically addictive.

I'm currently uploading the mugshot of Rodrigo Diez, please inform Interpol to add him to the international wanted list.

What is an addiction? What does this mean? How do people become addicted?

I flew into Diego's hometown Mexico 2 hours ago....
The situation seems worse than we thought. According to our information, Rodrigo Diez should be in Mexico city, but we don't know where. We infiltrated his factory 30minutes ago, yet there were only drug addicts in it. We captured an addict for furthur investigation, from him, we found out some information that:

Addiction can be defined as, a mental and physical dependency for something. When a person is addicted, they require a constant dose of the substance, and they develop unwanted symptoms when they stop using these substances. A person may get addicted when a certain substance gives them a good feeling and they try it again to feel it again. However, the initial high of the substance cannot be achieved again, meaning that a person would keep trying the substance to feel the 'highest' point of the substance. This is how most addictions start in people.

Diego suspects that Rodrigo Diez will leave Mexico in a few days, I'll get back to you after analyzing his whereabouts

How the drug is taken

MISSION SUCCESFUL
Gracias Jefe, your SWAT team has done a great job here. We've succesfully captured all drug dealers in the factory and confiscated 500kgs of psilocybin mushrooms. We took these samples to the lab to investigate more about psilocybin mushrooms. Diego reported this morning that psilocybin mushrooms are ingested orally. They may be brewed as a tea or added to other foods to mask their bitter flavor. Some users coat the mushrooms with chocolate--this both masks the flavor and disguises the mushrooms as candy. Once the mushrooms are ingested, the body breaks down the psilocybin to produce psilocyn. Here some of our samples from the lab.

Is this drug physically addictive?

Update on lab tests

Jefe, trustworthy scientists that ran some lab tests on the confiscated psilocybin mushrooms have confirmed new facts. Psilocybin mushrooms are non-toxic and non-addictive although they do create short term increases in tolerance of users! The toxins found in psilocybin mushrooms are less than those in aspirin and the substance doesn't cause any physical addiction. Users go back to this form of drug for the hallucinogenic effects that helps them feel 'relaxed' for a period of time. Yet, this substance does not create a physical craving.

More tests will be run and reported

Is the drug a stimulant or depressant?

Jefe,

I received a page from you asking whether psilocybin mushrooms were a stimulant or a depressant. My scientists have worked hard in exploring this question and have produced dependable answers. Psilocybin mushrooms are an stimulant hallucinogen drug, meaning that it causes dilation of the pupils, constriction of some arteries, a rise in blood pressure, and increased excitability of certain spinal reflexes. In common words, a person will feel very 'high' after taking this drug. I am still searching for the traces of Rodrigo Diez, he seems to have sighted in Moscow again. I will pursuit him after my research on psilocybin mushrooms.

History of the Subject/drug and its Classification

Jefe,
I have gathered up some information regarding psilocybin mushrooms. According to the books, Psilocybe mushrooms were a tradition in native Central American cultures, and have been in continuous use up to the present time. Named teonanacatl in Nahuatl, "flesh of the gods," they have been employed for healing, divination, and for intercession with the spirits.
Furthur research will be sent to you directly

Does the drug have a medical use?

Jefe,

Another update from the library,
Research shows that psilocybin mushrooms have absolutely no recognized medicinal uses. It was only used as religious healing purposes, and it hasn't been used as any sort of modern medicene.

Various effects of psilocybin mushrooms

Diego has returned! he paged me 10minutes ago regarding his investigation. He disguised himself as a drug user and hid into a drug using community of Kalimantan. Apparently psilocybin mushrooms also seems to be used there. Diego dug out some information out of short term users, long term users of psilocybin mushrooms. He also interviewed people who quit psilocybin mushrooms to gather crucial information. I'm currently uploading my data, furthur progress in our exploration will be reported immedietly.

A) short term effects

The effects are often pleasant, even ecstatic, including a deep sense of connection to others, and a general feeling of connection to nature and the universe. Psilocybin mushrooms also act on a person's sensory abilities, causing visual imageryand auditory effects. It also causes panic states, erotic arousals and beatific states. Intelluctually, it makes a person develop confused and introspective thinkings, mental clarity and even transcendent insights.

B) long term effects

When taken psilocybin mushrooms for a long period of time, mental and physical tolerance to psilocybin builds and dissipates quickly. Taking psilocybin more than three or four times in a week (especially two days in a row) can result in diminished effects and a less enjoyable experience. Tolerance dissipates after a few days, so frequent users often keep doses spaced 5-7 days apart to avoid the effect.

C) side effects

When a person develops unwanted effects after the consumption of psilocybin mushrooms, it is called a 'bad trip'. This especially happens when they are taken with other drugs, in huge doses, during times of mental instability, or by people with psychoemotional problems. In such situations, "bad trips" are much more likely to occur. Anxiety, frightening hallucinations, confronting past or deep-seated internal conflicts, and feelings of permanent disconnection from reality and the Self can be quite intense and cause panic.

D) withdrawal effects

Psilocybin mushrooms will not create withdrawal effects as it is not a physically addictive drug. Some may experience boredom after having a recreational activity taken away, but thats as bad as it can get. This is the reason why most psilocybin mushroom users are reacreational users.

E) price

$100~$250 per ounce
This is about Rp 920,910~RP 2,302,275

We also included a video that iillustrates how a person might feel after a psilocyin mushroom intake

Statistics on psilocybin mushrooms

Update on report

Further research on the books showed some interesting statistics. The British Crime Survey (2002/3) shows that about 180,000 16-59 year olds took mushrooms. The survey for 2003/4 shows an increase of 40% to (260,000) in one year. This shows the great increase of psilocybin mushroom users.

The psilocybin mushroom laws in Korea

Jefe,

Diego and I researched whether psilocybin mushrooms were legal in some countries. Most specifically we researched about Korean laws regarding psilocybin mushrooms. According to the Korean news, psilocybin mushrooms have been outlawed specifically in Korea as of June 2002. Any person caught possessing and selling psilocybin mushrooms will be arrested immedietly, however there isn't a death sentence in Korea. Before June 2002, psilocybin mushrooms, were readily available in large cities in Korea from street vendors and specialty herb shops.

(PS. We've recently found information regarding Rodrigo Diez, he was reported to have appeared in Miami Florida USA, we will be on the next flight to Miami)

How the drug affects families and communities, the economic costs to individuals, the community and law enforcement

Chief,

I'm in my plane to Miami right now. I've been thinking about how so many people use psilocybin mushrooms. I've come to conclude that by taking psilocybin mushrooms, one not only corrupts his life, but also devastate lives of people around them. Drug uses will make people experience unwanted effects such as depression and panic, this will cause them to be mentally and emotionally unstable. This emotional instability could cause problems in relationships with others, as they are likely to be more irritable and also reclusive. Not only that, psilocybin mushrooms are expensive ranging from $100~$250 per ounce. This means that one will cause a burden in a family's economy by being addicted to psilocybin mushrooms. The government will also use additional money to provide treatment courses and also to investigate drug traffickers. In conclusion, I consider the use of drugs destructive to oneself and other around them.

Examples of drug users

Transmition Received

This is my second transmission from my plane flight to Miami. I’ve just tried to imagine what sort of a person would use drugs. I know from my earlier research that there are many types of drug users, for example, drug abusers, drug misusers and recreational drug users.

To me, a drug abuser would be a male, white American doctor that is pretty successful in his career. However, since his work always requires him to be at the hospital, he rarely gets a chance to see his family. He is a very successful doctor that other envy, thus, he has more enemies than friends. While treating one of his patients, he hears how morphine makes you feel relaxed and free from stress. As a doctor, he is can easily obtain morphine and he does so. His morphine taking habits take place quickly as he constantly wants to be relieved from his stress by feeling ‘free’. He thinks that morphine is a key element of stopping him feeling dysphoria and he inevitably develops addiction. As his habits continue, he must elevate his drug doses, as his body develops tolerance and he no more feels the initial high. Another reason he cannot stop his morphine use is because he develops strong withdrawl effects if he doesn't use it. He gets body aches, nausea and body tremors if he doesn't continue his morphine. The doctor’s life eventually ends in a cold prison when he accidentally killed a patient by doing a surgery under heavy drug influence.

A drug misuser is someone who misuses a drug under a special circumstance. To me a strong example would be a Korean woman who regularly takes pain killers from her recent surgery. One day, she finds out that her husband has been fired, and she takes 5 tablets of pain killers at once instead of just having one. She does this, as she thinks that she can cure her emotional pain by doing this, and thus, she misuses her painkillers. She would probably develop side effects from her painkiller overdose and therefore she would be harming herself.

A recreational drug user is someone who occasionally uses drugs for recreational purposes unlike abusers, who require the drug to maintain their lives. An example of a recreational user is probably an African American high school teenager who has many friends and is very popular. One of his friends is a marijuana addict and is pretty close to this guy. Once in a while, the teenager goes over to his addict friend’s house for a sleep over, and so they smoke Marijuana together. The teenager doesn’t smoke Marijuana everyday, he likes how it feels and he thinks that doing Marijuana keeps his relationship with his friend steady. He doesn’t bother to buy Marijuana as it’s too much of a commitment to him, still he wouldn’t refuse getting free Marijuana from anyone.

These were some exemplary cases of drug users that came into my head. I just hopes the 3 types of drug using doesn’t happen as much as it does nowadays.

Explanation why characters are physically and psychologically addicted

There were a couple of clarifications needed for my transmission before.
The example of a drug abuser, which was the american doctor, was physically and psychologically addicted to morphine. Morphine is a highly addictive drug that creates strong withdrawal effects when the dosage is reduced or stopped. The doctor developed a psychological dependency, as he thought it was the only way to feel free of stress
The drug misuser example didn't really have strong addictions as she needed painkillers for the treatement and simply overdosed her painkillers after a psycological shock
The recreational Marijuana-using student however, was in a way, addicted to Marijuana. He wan't necessarily addicted physically but he was psychologically addicted to a degree. He relates to Marijuana as a pleasurable experience and this causes him to return to Marijuana without any sense of guilt.

How my family will be changed if a family member started abusing drugs or was addicted

Chief

I continue to make personal connections with my background and drugs. This time, I thought about how my family would change if a family member started abusing drugs or was addicted. The fact is, my family would definitely respond sensitively as they all feel responsible of taking care of family members. We would probably try to have some sort of family conferences or just simple 1:1 talks with the drug using family member. If one was addicted, we won't be hesitant in using our money to pay for rehabs, doctors and proffesional treatments. For us, family is much more important than money and so we will give our everything to cure a family member from drug addiction.

A visual to help your peers understand what this would mean

http://pro.corbis.com/images/BXP27112.jpg?size=572&uid=%7B908DA397-F383-4F0F-AE68-B1DA1DF7BAB4%7D

Chief,

I chose this picture as it caries a strong visual message. The person here is tormented by the unreasonably heavy burden they must carry. Drug use is essentially the same, if one decides to abuse drugs, one must carry the burden of money, relationship and health to continue using drugs. Another strong message this picture conveys is that the person is wearing a black suit. Black is a dark and ominous color that shows the chaos and evil that lurks in the lives of drug addicts. They literally lose themselves by using drugs and the black suit illustrates this. The weather too seems to be chaotic. Dark clouds cover the sky and it seems like there would be lightning any moment. Drug users go through a 'storm' when they are addicted. They get all sorts of pressures from all directions and they start falling into a pit they can't come out of alone. The picture would have looked much nicer if there was another person to share the burden with. Meaning that, in order for an addict to completely break from the chain of addiction, they need someone to support them.

A visual that defines the word empathy

http://www.freefoto.com/images/11/52/11_52_12---Glasses-Spectacles_web.jpg
Chief,

As I got to make more personal connections, I also got to think more about empathy. All drug users need empathy and support from others to break out of their addiction and so I decided to talk about empathy. I chose the picture above to symbolize empathy, as it has various similarities. To empathize a person, one must start to view others from their perspectives. Glasses symbolizes perspectives, as one uses glasses to see things more clearly. I personally don't have any experience with drugs, so I won't be able to see in their perspectives easily. However, by doing my investigation on drugs, I will be able to build a great deal of knowledge about drugs and so I will educate others or even provide facts to addicts. Another characteristics of glasses is that it helps one's eyesight. By being empathetic, we are also supporting people much like glasses support eyesight. Support and motivation from others is an essential factor when it comes to stopping drug use, and so glasses illustrate what I think is true empathy.

The qualities a good listener has

Chief,

As the plane almost arrives at Miami, I think about the power of listening. Everyone has something to say about others, it could be a conversation or a joke. But most importantly it could be confessions about one's deep feelings. We accuse drug users for their reliance on drugs when it comes to psychological issues. What if they chose to relieve themselves through drugs because no one cared to listen to their problems? In fact, I think this is why people tend to use drugs as a way to relax them and free them from stress. In a busy world like nowadays, it is very difficult to engage in a deep conversation where one asks for advice and discusses about personal issues. Therefore it is essential for one to always be prepare to hear what others are willing to tell them. It is also important that one gives feedback, for example advices, when others tell personal stories to them. These are what I consider, to be essential qualities of a good listener

School policies on drug use

Chief,

Diego just contacted me from Jakarta. He sais he is at J.I.S, one of the finest facilities of education. He confirmed that, in J.I.S, the consequences of drug use are,

First offence: 4 or more days suspension, six counseling sessions with outside counselor, name notified to Indonesian authorities, regular drug testing
Second offence: recommend expulsion

Students caught abusing and selling drugs

Chief, more information regarding JIS school policies

JIS seems to have a great system where students can provide information concerning other students' drug use to councellors anonymously. Through this method, students can show their concern for their friends by providing counselling help.

selling, supplying, trafficking, buying, aiding, abetting, taking or being under the influence of serious drugs
first offence: Expulsion'

JIS seems to have harsh and effective policies against drug use, to create a drug free community

Article about my drug and culture

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn9522-magic-mushrooms-really-cause-spiritual-experiences.html

Chief, I found this article that shows how psilocybin mushrooms may create religious experiences in a human. However, the specialists say that an artificially created religious cannot replace a religious life that provides, mental and spiritual health. Therefore, it is saying that one must find psycological comfort in religions or communities, NOT drugs.

Song about your drug abuse

Because i got high
Artist: Afroman
Album: The Good Times
Year: 2000

I was gonna clean my room until I got high
I gonna get up and find the broom but then I got high
My room is still messed up and I know why- cause I got high (repeat 3x)

I was gonna go to class before I got high
I coulda cheated and I coulda passed but I got high
I am taking it next semester and I know why- cause I got high (repeat 3x)

I was gonna go to work but then I got high
I just got a new promotion but I got high
Now I’m selling dope and I know why- cause I got high (repeat 3x)

I was gonna go to court before I got high
I was gonna pay my child support but then I got high
They took my whole paycheck and I know why- cause I got high (repeat 3x)

I wasnt gonna run from the cops but I was high
I was gonna pull right over and stop but I was high
Now I am a paraplegic - because I got high (repeat 3x)

I was gonna pay my car note until I got high
I was gonna gamble on the boat but then I got high
Now the tow truck is pulling away and I know why- because I got high (repeat 3x)

I lost my kids and wife because I got high
Now I’m sleeping on the sidewalk and I know why- cause I got high (repeat 3x)

3 endorphin releasing activities

I've discovered some healthier ways to create endorphin in the brain without using drugs

  1. Exercise creates endorphine in the brain
  2. The consumption of chocolate is also known to create endorphins in the brain
  3. In 1999, clinical researchers reported that inserting acupuncture needles into specific body points triggers the production of endorphins

Helping a friend of family

Jefe, I created a plan on what I would do if a familiy member started abusing drugs.

  • I would first tell them that they're addicted to the drug, and help them grow the will to change.
  • I would secondly ask them if they're going through any sort of distress, talking out their problems is key, as it may prevent further dependence on drugs
  • I would NOT FORCE them to quit, as this may aggravate them more
  • I would DEFINITELY apply them to a rehab course, an example in indonesia is Yayasan Kita (http://www.expat.or.id/orgs/yayasankita.html)
  • I will approach them in an openminded way, telling them that I understand their feelings
  • Constant encouragements will make them feel much motivated
  • I will remind them about the negative effects of the drug

Remember the ONLY way for one to breakaway from addiction is through the love, care and support of others!

A drug abuser who does not want to quit or even acknowledge that there is a problem

Chief,

There are always those who do not want to admit nor acknowledge that they have a problem. The most important thing for these kind of people is to make them admit their problems. In every problem one faces, the first step is to recognize the problem. In this case, it is accepting the fact that one is addicted and needs change. The second step is to motivate for change. After recognizing a problem, one must have enough motivation to break out of their comfort zone and solve a problem. In the case of drug abusers, these two steps are the most important

2 movies about psilocybin mushrooms

Chief, I met up with Diego in Kazhakstan as Rodrigo Diez was last seen in here. We are disguising ourselves as drug dealers to find out his where abouts. But before that, I will give my report on the movie searching task you gave me.

The first movie I would like to talk about is 'Shrooms'. I would put this movie into one word, gruesome. When one watches this film, they would feel absolutely disgusted on how psilocybin mushrooms can devastate lives of many people. A character called Tara murders several people under the influence of psilocybin mushrooms, without even knowing that she did it. This movie has some elements that are fictional, but it still conveys a clear message that, when one uses drugs, they are not only damaging themselves but others too.
The Trailer is available here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLgqnWh0_O8

Another movie that I would like to talk about is 'Detroit Rock City'. This movie is suprisingly a comedy that isn't centered around the use of drugs. However, the reason I used this movie as an example is because it shows how the media strongly influences people to use drugs. This movie is centered around a group of goofy teenage boys that want to see a band called 'KISS' perform. To escape their catholic boarding school, they intoxicate the priest by putting psilocybin mushrooms on his pizza. This scene is used to convey the message that the boys using drugs on other people were a 'good' and heroic act. This sort of media propaganda happens everytime we turn the T.V on or even watch movies. Certainly, the incorrect factual display of drugs is one of the reasons the population of drug addicts are increasing.

The long road

Jefe, we are tracking down Rodrigo Diez he seems to have fled from the city. I have to admit that during the process of chasing a psilocybin mushroom drug lord and investigating drugs, I have learnt a great deal. One of them is that it isn't so easy for drug abusers to simply 'stop using' drugs. For example, I would definitely have difficulties in stopping from eating sushi. It is my favorite food and I often socialize with my friends in sushi restaurants. This whole mission was a great learning process, as I was able to relate drugs not only to encyclopedias but my actual life. Indeed, for drug addicts, stop using drugs is the same as breaking their habits and therefore is a long road to go

I am guilty

Chief, I confess now that I've done some things I'm not proud of. I know how I'm educating fellow agents on how we should make the right choices in life, but in real life, I've made bad choices myself. Not long ago, I stopped by CITOS with fellow agents and stopped at an icecream shop called Cold Stone Creamery. I knew that icecream isn't the healthiest desert we can get, yet I saw the banner saying that anyone with a student ID will receive a 50% discount. Me and my agents went in and ordered icecream right away. I actually ordered a cheesecake icecream and mixed it with peanut butter cups. I admit it, I knew that I was making the wrong decision but there were reasons I couldn't resist. First of all, I felt pressured by my peer agents, as everyone was getting an icecream with peanut butter cups. I've heard from other agents that the icecream here were great and I wanted to try the 'best icecream in town' myself.

I see how drug addicts start their addiction through a large array of ways, and I think that I could have been addicted as well, if i were put in their shoes. A solution to this is to educate others and myself on the dangers of drugs. This will prevent me from starting nor experimenting with any sort of drug.

A possible place for help

Chief, I've located a rehabilitation center located in Bogor, it seems to have great treatment programs. Please inform other agents about this facility.

Yayasan Harapan Permata Hati Kita is an organization that specializes in addiction treatments and recoveries, it is a great place for many abusers to refer to as it is a non profit organization. They also provide training for counselling as well. The sources

Chief, I have found Rodrigo Diez's hide out. We will initiate a full fledged attack tomorrow. This will possibly be my last transmission. If I do not page you within 48 hours, consider me dead and find a replacement agent. I leave my information sources so that my replacement agent can be educated.

Chief,

This method of learning was VERY fun and effective for me, as it provided me a shot at trying various new things. I am an interpersonal learner according to http://www.thirteen.org/edonline/concept2class/mi/exploration_sub1.html ) and so I'm very good with playing 'specialist roles'. This project fit my type of learning very well, as it provided opportunities of interacting with others and also specializing in one type of drug. It also gave us a connection between real drug issues and us, not just the text book connection we normally have. I strongly suggest on other health classes to continue this type of learning approach, it was new, but it was effective and succesful!
